You know the technological singularity, the theoretical idea of a future moment at which AI starts to upgrade itself so rapidly that everything after that point shifts forever? Well, now a group of Italian AI scientists have come up with a new means of estimating how far away humanity is from reaching that point. And, as Popular Mechanics reports, their calculations indicate that we're not far off. "Language is the most natural thing for humans," Marco Trombetti, CEO of the Italian AI startup Translated, said last year at a conference in Orlando, Florida. Per PopMech, Trombetti and his team basically argue that because language is so natural for humans, and historically so difficult for machines to grasp, the ability of machines to catch up with and even surpass humanity's ability to translate language could be grounds to grant a machine that does so Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) status.

When Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, it was the 21st search engine to enter the market. In 2022 Google generated over $200 billion in revenue off of search advertising and other digital advertising. MIcrosoft launched the Bing search engine in 2009, built from the assets of Live Search which was released in 2006. By all accounts, Microsoft Bing was the laggard among Google and Yahoo in the space. Round 1 of the search engine wars was won by Google which has dominate for almost two decades.

NYU professor emeritus Gary Marcus has warned that AI as it is understood can't translate to save its life because it really can't understand what it is seeing. Marcus said that people are led to believe that AI understands human language, which it certainly does not. What it really is, is a glorified autocomplete system that predicts words and sentences. Just like with your phone, you type in something, and it continues. It doesn't understand what it is doing or its meaning.

Ten years after introducing "Google Glass," Alphabet Inc. has created a new kind of smart eyeglasses. The company says the wearable computer device can translate different languages in real time. A working model, or prototype, of the yet-unnamed device was presented to the public this week during the yearly Google I/O developer conference. Google did not say when the glasses might go on sale to the public. The first Google Glass device included a wearable camera that could film what the wearers saw.

Two new research papers detail unsupervised machine-learning methods that can do language translation without dictionaries, as reported in Science. The methods also work without parallel text, or identical text that already exists in another language. The papers, completed independently of one another, use similar methods. Both projects start by building bilingual dictionaries without the aid of a human to say whether they were right or not. Each takes advantage of the fact that relationships between certain words, like tree and leaves or shoes and socks, are similar across languages.

By thinking of atoms as letters and molecules as words, artificial intelligence software from IBM is now employing the same methods computers use to translate languages to predict outcomes of organic chemical reactions, which could speed the development of new drugs. In the past 50 years, scientists have tried to teach computers how chemistry works so that computers can help predict the results of organic chemical reactions. However, organic chemicals can be extraordinarily complex, and simulations of their behavior can prove time-consuming and inaccurate. Instead, researchers at IBM took the kind of AI program normally used to translate languages and applied it toward organic chemistry. "Instead of translating English into German or Chinese, we had the same artificial intelligence technology look at hundreds of thousands or millions of chemical reactions and had it learn the basic structure of the'language' of organic chemistry, and then had it try to predict the outcomes of possible organic chemical reactions," says study co-author Teodoro Laino at IBM Research in Zurich. "We want to help chemists design new synthesis routes for organic compounds," Laino says.

Google has unveiled its first AI headphones with a smart assistant built in.
